Mela remains exceptional at recipe-site feeds, and it now scans recipes from books and extracts recipes from YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram descriptions. Brasa's distinction starts when the written description is incomplete: import a saved cooking video and it can read the narration and on-screen method on-device first, then use a compressed cloud-AI fallback only when needed.

Minimal vs helpful in the kitchen

Mela's cooking view is calm and beautiful. Brasa's is informed: each step carries its own ingredients and amounts, parallel "meanwhile" steps get flagged with live countdowns, timers persist on the Lock Screen, and scaling speaks in real kitchen fractions. It's also conversational — say “next” or “how much butter” and Brasa Voice answers out loud in a natural neural voice that runs entirely on your device.* Brasa Plus also estimates nutrition automatically, as helpful context rather than a diet product.

iCloud vs end-to-end encrypted

Mela syncs through iCloud, which is convenient and reasonably private. Brasa runs its own sync layer that's end-to-end encrypted with no account — your library is encrypted before it leaves the device, and the server stores only ciphertext. For a decade of family recipes, we think that's the right default.

No contest on sticker price: Mela's one-time $6.99/$14.99 is cheaper than any subscription.
